The Grand Pour – Setting a World Record

Previously the site of the 16-story Wilshire Grand Hotel, the structure was redeveloped by Korean Air in 2013 and wrapped up construction in 2017. The building features five levels of underground parking, convention space, office suites, and a 900-room hotel. The tallest building west of the Mississippi, the Wilshire Grand Redevelopment set the record for the world’s longest continuous pouring of concrete for a high-rise building. Dubbed the “grand pour”, this engineering feat lasted for 20 hours, almost 2,000 truckloads and 84 million pounds of concrete were brought in to lay 21,200 cubic yards of concrete. Twining is currently providing deputy inspection and materials testing services for this project. During the “grand pour”, Twining had the most inspectors on-site at one time for a single project in history. We were on-site during the pour to pick up and test over 1,000 concrete cylinders.
